C-130J Super Hercules crash: IAF sends black box to US for decoding data

NEW DELHI: The black box of the C-130J transport aircraft that crashed near Gwalior on Friday has suffered damage and the Air Force has sent it to the US to seek the assistance of its manufacturer Lockheed Martin in decoding the data, IAF officials said on Sunday.

The connectors of the Flight Data Recorder or the black box are damaged along with the card inside the Cockpit Voice Recorder (CVR).

"To avoid any loss of data while trying to decode the equipment, we have decided to send the black box to the US," an IAF spokesperson said here.

The black box was sent by an early morning flight today to Lockheed Martin, he said.

The delay in decoding the black box data would also mean a delay in determining the cause of the crash, he said.

The IAF had stated on Friday that it would come out with a preliminary report on the reasons behind the mishap in 24 hours.

The IAF spokesperson also denied reports suggesting that the C-130J fleet has been grounded after the crash, saying the aircraft did not fly yesterday as the personnel of the squadron were busy in the last rites of the five victims of the crash.

The Super Hercules Special Operations transport aircraft crashed near Gwalior killing five crew members on Friday last after taking off from Agra.

The aircraft had apparently hit a hillock before crashing on the rocky surface on the banks of Chambal river near Gwalior.

India had recently inducted six C-130J Super Hercules aircraft, which were bought from the US at a cost of around Rs 5,780 crore (USD 962 million) four years ago.

The home base of the 77 squadron 'Veiled Vipers' operating the aircraft is Hindon in Ghaziabad near here.

The aircraft were recently landed on the Daulat Beg Oldie air field near the China border and have helped in boosting the IAF's capability to airlift troops closer to the border in times of emergency.

On the demands of the IAF, the Defence Ministry recently placed orders for six more such aircraft from the US.

The loss of such a big asset is considered a setback for the IAF.

Japan berates China’s Xi Jinping over Nanjing remarks in Berlin

TOKYO: Tokyo on Sunday criticized Chinese President Xi Jinping for making remarks during a trip to Germany about Japan's wartime atrocities, adding that the government had lodged a protest.

At a thinktank forum Friday in Berlin, Xi criticized Japan's wartime atrocities, saying the Japanese military killed more than 300,000 people in Nanjing in 1937 when it occupied the Chinese city, Jiji Press and Kyodo News reported.

Xi also said more than 35 million Chinese people were killed or injured as Japan waged a war of aggression stemming from its militarism, Kyodo said.

"It is extremely unproductive that a Chinese leader makes such remarks about Japanese history in a third country," Chief cabinet secretary Yoshihide Suga told reporters.

He also said Japan's foreign ministry has lodged a protest with the Chinese government yesterday.

History bears heavy on the Japan-China relationship, most weightily in Nanjing.

Japan invaded China in the 1930s and the two countries fought a full-scale war from 1937 to 1945.

China says more than 300,000 people were slaughtered by Japanese troops in a six-week killing spree in the then capital Nanjing, which began on December 13 1937.

Though some foreign academics put the number of deaths much lower, no respected mainstream historians dispute that a massacre took place.

Japan, which was occupied after its defeat and became a vibrant liberal democracy, has issued apologies for its wartime conduct in Asia.

But frequent statements by conservative politicians and public figures seemingly backstepping from them or calling into question issues of historical fact have increased suspicion of the country's motives.

Beijing and Tokyo are also locked in a row also over ownership of a group of small uninhabited islands in the East China Sea.

On Friday, China berated Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe for reportedly drawing an analogy between the Crimea crisis and a row between Beijing and Tokyo over the disputed islands.

MH370 search looks for debris breakthrough in new area

Written By Unknown on Sabtu, 29 Maret 2014 | 17.34

PERTH: Searchers scouring the Indian Ocean for Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370 were hoping Saturday to salvage debris for the first time which could finally confirm whether the jet plunged into the sea.

Planes attached to the multinational operation spotted "multiple objects" floating in the water on Friday after the focus of the search moved to a new area on the strength of fresh data indicating the plane was flying faster than first thought before it disappeared on March 8.

Authorities stressed that the items sighted could not be verified as coming from MH370 until they were physically examined and ships from China and Australia were steaming to the search zone in an effort to locate them.

The Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) said late Friday that one Chinese ship, the Haixun 01, was already in the area "and will be in a position to relocate the objects on Saturday".

By late Friday, the Haixun 01 had reported no major sightings except for "a few light-coloured, palm-size floating objects", official state news agency Xinhua said.

An Australian naval vessel, HMAS Success, is also expected to reach the area late Saturday and four more Chinese ships are on their way. More than two-thirds of the 239 people on board the flight were Chinese.

New Zealand Air Vice-Marshal Kevin Short said spotters from a New Zealand Orion plane saw 11 objects in the sea, most of them rectangular and ranging in size from 50-100 centimetres (20-40 inches).

"Our crew couldn't identify anything that would say it was definitely from the Malaysian aircraft," he said. "I think the main issue is that those objects will have to be picked up by a ship so they can physically examine them."

Ten aircraft from six countries -- Australia, China, Japan, New Zealand, South Korea and the United States -- are involved in the search, which is taking place far off Western Australia and about 1,100 kilometres (685 miles) northeast of where initial efforts were focused.

Malaysian Transport Minister Hishammuddin Hussein said the new search area, "although more focused than before, remains considerable; and the search conditions, although easier than before, remain challenging".

The revised search sector -- about the size of Norway -- was "based on continuing analysis of radar data between the South China Sea and the Strait of Malacca before radar contact was lost (with MH370)", AMSA said.

"It indicated that the aircraft was travelling faster than previously estimated, resulting in increased fuel usage and reducing the possible distance the aircraft travelled south into the Indian Ocean."

The new area is closer to land, meaning planes can spend more time searching before having to return to refuel, and enjoys better weather than seas further south where the search had been concentrated.

Satellite sightings of unidentified debris by several nations in recent days in the previous zone raised hopes of finding wreckage from the Boeing 777, but nothing was retrieved as rough weather plagued the search.

Malaysia believes the plane was deliberately redirected by someone on board and flown thousands of miles southwards, but nothing else is known.

"This is a credible new lead and will be thoroughly investigated today," Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott said of the revised search area.

Malaysian officials said the new zone was identified following an analysis of radar data by experts from Boeing who have joined an international investigation team in Kuala Lumpur.

They took MH370's estimated speed when it was briefly tracked by Malaysian military radar shortly after it diverted to the west -- the last time MH370 appeared on radar.

The new search area is around 1,850 kilometres west of Perth. Australia is re-positioning its satellites to focus on it.

As the search moves to the new area, the clock is ticking on the tracking signal emitted by the plane's "black box" of flight data, which lasts about 30 days.

The US Pacific Fleet has moved specialised black box locator equipment to Perth, poised to begin searching once an approximate crash site is established.

"It's critical to continue searching for debris so we can reverse-forecast the wind, current and sea state since March 8 to recreate the position where MH370 possibly went into the water," said Commander Tom Moneymaker, US 7th Fleet oceanographer.

Seeking closure, anguished families of the plane's passengers and crew are desperately awaiting solid evidence that might unlock one of aviation's greatest riddles.

Until then, many have refused to accept the Malaysian government's conclusion that the plane went down at sea.

Underscoring simmering tensions, on Friday in Beijing hundreds of Chinese family members walked out of a briefing by Malaysian officials, who were left to stare at ranks of empty chairs while a relatives' representative berated them.

The militants opened fire at the Nato container in Dhadar area late last night, according to a levies official.

"The driver was killed in the firing while the cleaner was wounded in the attack," he said.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack.

Since then militants have been targeting the Nato tankers in the province, rife with a separatist insurgency and sectarian violence.

Dozens of containers have been charred and looted, and over two dozen crew members killed in Balochistan over the last seven years.

2G scam: Subramanian Swamy tells court he is collecting material for plea

PTI | Mar 29, 2014, 02.06PM IST
NEW DELHI: BJP leader Subramanian Swamy on Saturday told a Delhi court that he was collecting material in support of his petition seeking summoning of a written statement given by former telecom minister A Raja to JPC in connection with 2G scam.

Swamy told Special CBI Judge O P Saini that he had already received some documents while he would soon get more material to press for summoning of the then finance ministry officials — Sindhushree Khullar and Shyamala Shukla — as witnesses to explain file notings during the meetings which took place regarding allocation of 2G spectrum during Raja's tenure.

He also sought adjournment of hearing on his plea which is scheduled on April 5, saying he was going to Gujarat during the period.

During the hearing, the special judge suggested Swamy that he was adjourning the matter "sine die" and asked him to move an appropriate application later after receiving the documents in support of his petition.

Swamy agreed to the suggestion by the judge after which the matter was adjourned "sine die".

Swamy had earlier argued that Raja's statement to the JPC was an important piece of document to arrive at the truth and the logical conclusion in the 2G spectrum case.

He had also alleged that examination of witnesses of CBI was incomplete as they have not discussed the meetings regarding allocation of 2G spectrum.

He had said Raja's statement to the JPC speaks about various meetings which took place regarding allocation and pricing of spectrum.

On May 4 last year, Swamy had approached the court saying, "In order to ensure that all aspects of the case are examined, actual culprits may be booked, tried and punished it is necessary to summon the complete written statement filed by A Raja before the JPC".

Swamy has sought summoning of Raja's written statement to JPC chairman PC Chacko along with the draft report of JPC, the draft report of the public accounts committee and also Shukla, the then director of infrastructure, and Khullar, the then additional secretary of economic affairs department, to ascertain the truth.

Sohrabuddin Sheikh encounter case: SC grants bail to former IPS officer Rajkumar Pandian

Written By Unknown on Jumat, 28 Maret 2014 | 17.34

NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Friday granted bail to suspended Gujarat cadre IPS officer Rajkumar Pandian, who was arrested in connection with the alleged fake encounter killings of Sohrabuddin Sheikh and his wife Kauserbi.

A bench of Chief Justice P Sathasivam, justices Ranjan Gogoi and N V Ramana granted the relief to Pandian.

The IPS officer had moved the apex court in December, 2013 after the Bombay HC on November 20 last year rejected his bail application.

The CBI had opposed the bail application in the high court, saying the police officer is a key accused who had picked up the duo from Hyderabad before they were killed in the alleged fake encounter.

Pandian, along with IPS officer Abhay Chudasma, Rajasthan cadre IPS officer Dinesh M N and some other policemen are lodged in Taloja jail in Navi Mumbai after the Supreme Court transferred the trial in the case to Mumbai from Ahmedabad.

The other accused IPS officer, D G Vanzara, was brought back to Ahmedabad in connection with the case of alleged encounter of Ishrat Jahan and three others and remains lodged in Sabarmati Central Jail.

Former Gujarat minister of state for home and BJP leader Amit Shah, who is out on bail, is also an accused in the case.

Sheikh and his wife were allegedly abducted by Gujarat's ATS from Hyderabad and killed in a suspected fake encounter near Gandhinagar in November 2005.

Nepal mulls ban on foreigners climbing alone on Everest

KATHMANDU: Nepal is considering banning foreign climbers from scaling Mount Everest alone in a bid to reduce accidents on the world's highest peak, an industry official said Wednesday.

Solo climbers would be forced to take a local guide up the mountain amid concerns of safety, overcrowding and piles of rubbish on the "roof of the world," the president of the Nepal Mountaineering Association said.

The proposed ban is likely to anger elite solo mountaineers, who enjoy the challenge of climbing alone, even eschewing bottled oxygen, and who blame a huge influx of commercial expeditions for littering the peak.

The proposal is one of a string of measures being flagged ahead of the start of the climbing season in late April, and comes 12 months after a brawl on the mountain between three European climbers and local guides.

"We are considering making it compulsory for individual foreign climbers to take along a local guide when they go to Everest, to reduce risks and prevent accidents," said Ang Tshering Sherpa, whose association represents tourism promoters.

"Most of the accidents that take place on Everest involve mountaineers from abroad who don't use local guides," Sherpa told AFP.

Sherpa said the guides would also help climbers carry down garbage in line with new rules requiring each mountaineer to bring back eight kilograms (17.6 pounds) of rubbish from the mountain.

Bilawal Bhutto claims receiving threats from banned Lashkar-e-Jhangvi

KARACHI: Bilawal Bhutto, the chairperson of the Pakistan Peoples Party, has claimed he received threats from the banned Lashkar-e-Jhangvi.

"Received threat letter from LEJ. Will hold Punjab govt responsible 4 LEJ attacks if Sharif cont 2 give them protection & refuse2 take action," Bilawal, son of late Prime Minister, Benazir Bhutto and former President, Asif Zardari tweeted on Thursday night.

The PPP which rules the southern Sindh Province, has in the past accused the Punjab government of sheltering the LeJ, which is also reported to have sent threat letters to the provincial government, warning them to stop "atrocities", otherwise they would resort to targeting law enforcing agents and government officials.

The chief minister of Punjab, Shahbaz Sharif, immediately took notice of Bilawal's tweet and has ordered the inspector-general of Punjab to contact the PPP leader and look into the threats sent to him.

A spokesman for Bilawal House, the official residence of the Zardari family, said steps have been taken to increase security for Bilawal and his sisters after the LEJ threats.

The PPP leader travels in a heavy convoy of police and personal security vehicles in Karachi.

Bilawal's mother was assassinated shortly after addressing a public rally in Rawalpindi and before that she had survived a suicide bomb attack after returning to Pakistan from an exile.

9 officers removed, one resigns in US Air Force cheating probe

WASHINGTON: The head of the nuclear missile wing at a base in Montana resigned on Thursday and nine officers were removed from their jobs over a test-cheating scandal that involved 91 missile launch officers, the Air Force said.

Lieutenant General Stephen Wilson, head of the Air Force's Global Strike Command, said Colonel Robert Stanley, commander of the 341st Missile Wing at Malmstrom Air Force Base, had resigned on Thursday and would retire from the service.

The nine other officers, mainly colonels and lieutenant colonels, were removed from their positions of command at the Montana base that is home to a third of the nation's nearly 450 intercontinental ballistic missiles. They will be reassigned to staff jobs and face discipline ranging from reprimands to courts martial for failures of leadership.

Wilson said the root of the problem was the emphasis on perfection in the nuclear mission at the Montana base and throughout the missile force, which led to cheating on exams in an effort to achieve the sort of perfect scores perceived to required for advancement and promotion.

The exams were classroom tests to check staff knowledge of how to carry out the nuclear mission and security procedures.

"Leadership's focus on perfection led commanders to micro-manage their people. They sought to ensure that the zero defect standard was met by personally monitoring and directing daily operations, imposing unrelenting testing and inspections with the goal of eliminating all human error," Wilson told a Pentagon news conference.

He and Air Force Secretary Deborah James said the evaluation and assessment of missile launch officers would be radically overhauled in an effort to change the culture and behavior that has developed in the missile wing.

Low morale

Nuclear critics say the problem is deeply rooted and has been going on for years, becoming increasingly acute since the end of the Cold War as the nuclear mission has increasingly come to be seen as a dead-end career that's relevance is in decline.

"Many of these issues come back to the fundamental fact that a lot of these people who sit in the holes out there are in a way demoralized. They are sitting ready for a scenario that is unlikely to ever happen," said Jon Wolfstahl, a former nonproliferation official with the White House's National Security Council who is now with the Monterrey Institute.

"During the Cold War, the ICBM force on high alert was very ... prominent in the nuclear posture," he told reporters this week. "It seems far less relevant in the day we live in ... and in the foreseeable future."

The cheating scandal was discovered earlier this year as officials were investigating several officers for illegal drug activity. Investigators looking at the officers' cell phones found test material, including answers and a photograph of a classified test answer, Wilson said.

The cheating investigation eventually involved 100 officers who were believed to have received test material, sent test material or who were aware the cheating was going on. Allegations against nine were not substantiated and they will be retrained and returned to duty, Wilson said.

Of the 91 remaining cases, nine are still being probed by the Air Force Office of Special Investigations, including eight suspected of mishandling classified information and three for alleged illegal drug activity, Wilson said. The remainder have been implicated in the cheating scandal.

James said the investigation following the cheating incident found "systemic issues in our missile community," including "spotty morale and micro-management issues at all of the bases." She said the Air Force would implement a "holistic plan" to address the problems.

The Air Force will spend $19 million this fiscal year to refurbish the launch control center and repair infrastructure across the missile wing, James said. Another $3 million will go for "quality of life requirements" at the missile bases, which are in remote areas of the country where weather is often harsh.

She said substantially more funding would be devoted to improving the force in 2015 and beyond, but equally important would be the emphasis on the importance of the missile launch job and ensuring young officers in the specialized field have a realistic career path.

James said it was "terribly important that people see a path to rise through the ranks, so that it will be in fact and in perception viewed as a good job."

Rajapaksa orders release of Indian fishermen after UN vote

COLOMBO: President Mahinda Rajapaksa ordered the release of all Indian fishermen in Sri Lankan custody, hours after India abstained from backing a resolution against Colombo at the UN.

Just over 100 Indian fishermen remain in Sri Lankan custody after some 170 others were freed last week, reports Xinhua.

The President's Office said on Friday that Rajapaksa ordered all remaining Indian fishermen to be set free as a goodwill gesture.

The Indian government on Thursday made a surprise decision to abstain from voting at the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva and criticized the US sponsored draft resolution saying it was inconsistent and impractical.

There was strong speculation that India would back the resolution, especially with political parties in Tamil Nadu raising the pitch against the Sri Lankan government.

But India's permanent representative to the UN in Geneva, Dilip Sinha, said it was New Delhi's firm belief that adopting an intrusive approach that undermined national sovereignty and institutions was counter-productive.

The resolution was, however, passed by a majority vote with 23 countries in the 47-member council voting for it and 12 against. A total of 12 countries abstained.

China, Russia, Pakistan and Cuba were among the countries that voted against the resolution. Japan also abstained.

The resolution calls for an international investigation over alleged human rights abuses during the war in Sri Lanka. Colombo says it will not agree to an international probe.

KOTTAYAM: (Kerala): Yesteryear veteran director P Ramdas, who introduced the neo-realistic wave in Malayalam cinema during the 1950s through his path breaking movie "Newspaper Boy", has passed away at a hospital.

Bank of America to pay $9.3 billion to settle mortgage bond claims

Written By Unknown on Kamis, 27 Maret 2014 | 17.34

Reuters | Mar 27, 2014, 04.11AM IST
WASHINGTON: Bank of America will pay $9.3 billion to Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac to settle claims that it sold them faulty mortgage-backed securities during the housing bubble, a US regulator said on Wednesday.

The settlement resolves claims filed by the Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA), since 2008 the conservator of Fannie and Freddie for the government-controlled mortgage companies.

It was the 10th settlement that the FHFA has reached in litigation that began in 2011 when it filed 18 lawsuits over about $200 billion in mortgage-backed securities, an investment product at the center of the recent global financial crisis.

Many of the settlements were reached after a series of court rulings that went against the banks.

So far, the FHFA has recovered more than $10 billion from banks by asserting similar claims over mortgage securities.

Bank of America said in a statement that the FHFA settlement is expected to reduce first-quarter income by approximately $3.7 billion.

UK deputy PM Nick Clegg and anti-EU rival Nigel Farage trade barbs in debate

LONDON: Britain's Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg locked horns with the leader of the country's most anti-EU party in the first of two face-to-face debates ahead of forthcoming European Parliament elections.

Clegg, leader of the Europhile Liberal Democrats, on Wednesday argued that Britain was "better off in Europe - richer, stronger, safer", but UK Independence Party (UKIP) head Nigel Farage countered that the European Union was no longer fit to face the challenges of the modern economy.

Clegg and Farage, who wants to pull Britain out of the EU, will meet again for another debate on April 2.

Farage's party is expected to make large gains in the May 22 elections, while Clegg's is expected to fare badly.

The deputy prime minister said he wanted "a Britain that leads in the world by standing tall in our own European backyard, a Britain prepared to work with other countries on the things we can't possibly sort out on our own.

"We are better off in Europe - richer, stronger, safer - and that's why I will fight to keep us in, for the sake of jobs, for the sake of our clout in the world, for the sake of Britain," he added.

Farage said Britain had "sold his birthright" by handing powers to the EU, and vowed to act to reclaim control of lawmaking from Brussels and to cap immigration. But he insisted he wanted to keep close ties with the continent.

"This debate is between a tired status quo defending a crumbling EU that frankly isn't working anymore, and a fresh approach that says let's be friendly with Europe, let's trade with Europe, but let's not be governed by their institutions," he said.

But he controversially suggested that the EU had "blood on its hands" over Ukraine, claiming that its desire to create an "empire" had given Ukrainians false hope of being able to counter Russia's influence.

Commentators largely agreed that Farage had dominated the early rounds of the hour-long debate, hosted by London radio station LBC, but that Clegg had hit back later on.

A YouGov poll of 1,003 people published immediately after hostilities ceased showed that 57 per cent thought Farage had performed better, compared to 36 per cent for Clegg.

Recent polls show UKIP has moved ahead of the Lib Dems as Britain's third-most-popular political party.

British Prime Minister David Cameron, the Conservative Party leader, wants to renegotiate London's relationship with Brussels and stage an in-or-out referendum on EU membership by the end of 2017 if he remains prime minister after next year's general election.

Wanted cyber tycoon Kim Dotcom launches party to contest New Zealand poll

WELLINGTON: Kim Dotcom, accused by Washington of being one of the world's biggest internet pirates, plunged into politics on Thursday with the launch of a party to contest New Zealand's general election in September.

The alleged copyright pirate, also known as Kim Schmitz, said the Internet Party's guiding principles included faster, cheaper internet, the creation of high-tech jobs, and the protection of privacy.

"It is a movement for people who haven't voted before, who have been disappointed by voting, or who don't like the political choices on offer," Dotcom said in a statement.

"It is a movement for people who care about a digital future, and who want a society that is open, free and fair."

The flashy internet mogul is fighting a bid by US authorities to extradite him from his lavish estate in New Zealand to face online piracy charges over the now closed file-sharing site Megaupload.

The attention has not fazed Dotcom, a large and ebullient German national with New Zealand residency.

On Tuesday, Dotcom gloated over a deal that will see a cloud storage firm he founded while on bail listing on the New Zealand stock exchange and valued on paper at NZ$210 million ($179 million).

Recruitment is being done through the party's website and apps on mobile devices, where he is described as the Internet Party's "Visionary".

The party must sign up 500 members and register with electoral authorities to take part in the election.

Under New Zealand's proportional voting system, a party must win either an electorate seat or at least 5 percent of the nationwide vote to get into the 120-seat parliament.

A Reuters survey of six polls shows the centre-right National Party, which has been in power since 2008, with 48.2 percent support against the main opposition centre-left Labour Party, which has 33.3 percent.

Dotcom has the right to vote in New Zealand but cannot stand for election until he becomes a citizen.

Since his arrival in New Zealand in 2010, he has been embroiled in a political funding scandal, and forced an apology from Prime Minister John Key for illegal surveillance by a government spy agency.

In early 2012, the New Zealand government arrested Dotcom at his mansion near Auckland in a SWAT-style raid requested by the US Federal Bureau of Investigation. Dotcom is free on bail while he fights extradition, although his movements are restricted.

Founder of California-based Tri-Valley University convicted on 31 counts

WASHINGTON: The founder of California-based Tri-Valley University in the US, who destroyed the academic careers of several hundred Indian students, has been convicted on 31 counts including visa fraud by a federal grand jury.

Susan Xiao-Ping Su's sentencing is scheduled for June 20. The guilty verdict followed a three-week jury trial before the Jon S Tigar, US District Court Judge in San Francisco.

Through her illegal operations involving visa fraud and wire transfers Su made over $5.9 million through her operation of Tri-Valley University (TVU), prosecutors said.

About 90 per cent of TVU's students were from India. She engaged in seven money laundering transactions using proceeds to purchase commercial real estate, a Mercedes Benz car, and multiple residences, including a mansion on the Ruby Hill Golf Club in Pleasanton, California each in her name.

The investigation began in May, 2010 following a tip to federal investigators pertaining to irregularities at TVU.

Su was indicted by a federal grand jury in November, 2011. She was charged with wire fraud, mail fraud, conspiracy to commit visa fraud, visa fraud, use of a false document, false statements to a government agency, alien harbouring, unauthorised access to government computers, and money laundering.

Evidence at trial showed that Su, 43, engaged in a two-year scheme to defraud the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) by submitting fraudulent documents in support of TVU's petition for approval to admit foreign students and, after having obtained such approval, fraudulently issued visa-related documents to student aliens in exchange for "tuition and fees".

In her petition, Su made material false representations to DHS regarding TVU's admission requirements, graduation requirements, administrators, instructors, class transferability, and agreed to comply with federal regulations.

Three purported TVU professors testified that they never authorised Su to use their credentials in connection with the university. Multiple TVU employees testified that the university had no requirements for admission or graduation, and that Su routinely instructed her staff to fabricate fraudulent transcripts.

In carrying out the scheme, Su made additional false representations to DHS through TVU's use of the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS), which the US government uses, in part, to monitor the F-1 student visa programme, the Justice Department said.

Through her false representations, Su was able to unlawfully obtain and issue F-1 visa-related documents without regard to the students' academic qualifications or intent to pursue a course of study required to maintain a lawful immigration status.

Su admitted and maintained student aliens in exchange for tuition and other payments, the justice department said.

The jury also convicted Su of harbouring two TVU student employees to assist her in making the false representations to SEVIS. One of the harboured student employees testified that Su asked him to paint her house and to move furniture.

Coal scam: Court fixes May 2 for consideration on chargesheet

NEW DELHI: A Delhi court on Thursday fixed May 2 for considering the charge sheet filed by CBI in coal blocks allocation scam case against Navabharat Power Pvt Ltd and its two directors.

Special CBI Judge Madhu Jain fixed the matter for May 2 as CBI has not yet filed complete set of documents, which were part of the charge sheet filed on March 10.

According to the agency sources, CBI filed some of the documents which were part of the chargesheet in which the firm and its two directors were accused of conspiring and cheating by purportedly misrepresenting facts to "embellish" its applications to get allotments between 2006 and 2009.

This was the first charge sheet filed by CBI out of the 16 FIRs lodged by it till date in the multi-crore scam against various firms and top corporates, also including industrialist Kumar Mangalam Birla and Congress MP Naveen Jindal.

According to the agency sources, Navabharat Power Pvt Ltd, its two directors — P Trivikrama Prasad and Y Harish Chandra Prasad — were named as accused in the charge sheet filed before the court.

They have been charged under sections 420 (cheating) and 120-B (criminal conspiracy) of the IPC, sources said.

Surprisingly, the charge sheet makes no mention of provisions of Prevention of Corruption Act which was slapped against them in the FIR lodged on September 3, 2012.

The sources had, however, added that CBI has said in its 32-page final report that the probe against unknown public servants in the case is underway and they may file a supplementary charge sheet soon.

They had said that only the operative portion of the charge sheet was filed before the court on March 10.

CBI in its FIR filed on September 3, 2012, had named Navabharat Power Pvt Ltd, its two directors along with some unknown public servants of the ministry of coal and others in the case.

The FIR was lodged after a preliminary enquiry was initiated by CBI on a reference by the Central Vigilance Commission (CVC).

In the FIR, CBI had also accused unknown officials of the coal ministry of entering into conspiracy and "willfully" not scrutinizing documents to allow "undue advantage" for the company in getting the blocks.

National Security Guard conducts drill at star hotel in central Kolkata

KOLKATA: Soon after 10pm on Tuesday, the West Bengal government informs the Centre of a Mumbai-like terror strike in Kolkata. An unspecified number of terrorists have forced their way in to a star hotel in the heart of the city and are holding guests hostage. The Special Task Force (STF) of the Kolkata Police have cordoned off the area. The National Security Guard (NSG) hub on Badu Road near Kolkata has also been alerted. Commandos are busy with preparations and awaiting clearance from the ministry of home affairs.

The clearance arrives by 10.30pm and the Black Cats are on the move. Once at the hotel, the Kolkata Police share whatever details are available. The commandos study the layout of the hotel and prepare a strategy. The safety of all guests in paramount. The NSG then moves inside the hotel and skirmishes break out. After nearly three hours of action, that involves firefights and hand-to-hand combat, the threat is neutralised. The terrorists lie dead and all guests are safe. The first part of the drill is called off. A de-briefing to find out whether the drill went according to plan will take place back at base.

"This hotel was selected as it's location is unique. Unlike most other star hotels in Kolkata, it is located in a congested place in the heart of the city. There are a lot of people moving around throughout the day and till late in the evening. It is very difficult to sanitise the area or lay a perimeter. The strategy will have to be different. We have a highly-motivated and extremely well-trained team based at the NSG hub near Kolkata. They carry out drills at several locations including the Metro Railway and city highrises. The idea is to keep them prepared for any emergency," an MHA official said.

The hub hear Kolkata is in charge of nearly 12 states in the region. The present commanding officer Lt Col Rakesh Krishnan ensures that his men update their skills through routine exercises and drills. The colonel personally ensures that the commandos take up new challenges and learn how to tackle them. Though Krishnan was not available for comment, another official said: "I most drills, he is the one who heads the 'terrorists' and does everything within his power to outfox his men. In this way, they pick up new techniques and strategies. They learn to read the mind of the terrorist. Krishnan tells his men that they should always expect the unexpected."

'NaMo manch' not to campaign for BJP, but wants Modi to come to power

Written By Unknown on Rabu, 26 Maret 2014 | 17.34

KANNUR: NaMo Vichar Manch, the platform formed by a group of rebels in the BJP who raised their voice against the district leadership of the party, said on Tuesday that they are suspending the operations of the organization for the time being.

At the same time the Manch supporters will not campaign for BJP candidate P C Mohanan Master, though they want Narendra Modi to come to power in the Centre, which is an indication that the Manch would probably support the LDF candidate.

"We don't want the UDF candidate to win the election as we want the BJP to come to power in the Centre," said Manch president MK Saseendran addressing a press conference here on Tuesday.

However, he refused to elaborate further and said they have not given any instruction to the Manch supporters as far as the voting is concerned. There are many options including NOTA, he said.

"One thing is for sure; we will not caress the legs that wanted to kick us out, but as far voting is concerned, we leave it up to the followers of Manch," said Saseendran, giving a clear signal to the BJP that they will prove their strength in this election. "Since we don't want to go against the party discipline, we will not do anything against the BJP candidate but we will keep quiet."

He also said after leaders like O K Vasu joined the CPM, it helped them to intrude into some RSS strongholds. However, how far will this be translated into votes is something that could not be predicted now, he added.

The rebel leaders said the state leadership of the party refused to take any action against district president K Ranjith despite strong evidences, probably because of the fear that some other leaders will also have to be shown the door, as a few other are also probably involved in his misdeeds in one way or the other.

Convicted rapist and killer Jeffrey Ferguson executed in US

WASHINGTON: A man was executed on Wednesday in the US state of Missouri for the rape and murder of a teenage girl, authorities said.

It was the fifth execution in as many months in the midwestern state using a controversial chemical for lethal injections.

Jeffrey Ferguson, 59, was declared dead by a lethal dose of pentobarbital at 11 minutes after midnight (05H11 GMT), said Mike O'Connell, spokesman for the Missouri department of public safety.

Ferguson was condemned to death for the abduction, rape and killing of a 17-year-old girl in 1989 in a suburb of St Louis.

The girl's body was found 13 days after her kidnapping from a gas station where she had worked.

An accomplice pleaded guilty and was sentenced to life in jail with the possibility of parole.

Ferguson "was alcoholic" at the time of the crime but "changed a lot" in prison, said his attorney, Jen Herndon.

"He's very religious, he's ready to go, more ready than any other of my clients," Herndon told AFP shortly before the execution.

In his final appeals, which went all the way to the US Supreme Court, Ferguson said the anaesthetic with which he was to be put to death were manufactured by a company not certified by the federal government and whose name the state of Missouri refused to disclose.

He argued that the injection with pentobarbital could subject him to suffering that violated the constitutional ban on cruel and unusual punishment, according to court documents.

Since European manufacturers started refusing to supply US states with the usual chemicals used in US executions, Missouri has joined other states in turning to suppliers not certified by the US government.

This was the fifth execution in five months in Missouri with a chemical produced by a manufacturer not certified by the US government.

Another is planned for April.

Ferguson's execution was the 13th this year in the United States. Another is scheduled for Wednesday in Texas.

Don’t use children for election campaigning: Child rights’ panel

MUMBAI: The Maharashtra State Commission for Protection of Child Rights (MSCPCR) has written to the chief election commissioner to initiate a prohibiting measure so that no children may be roped in for election purposes.

In a letter sent to the election commission on Monday, secretary of MSCPCR, AN Tripathi has referred to newspaper clippings and other video footages available online where children are part of election rallies. "It appears that political parties are using children during roadshows, door-to-door campaigning and for other purposes. Young children are paraded during election meetings," said Tripathi in his letter.

This letter comes around the same time when a BJP candidate was caught on camera walking over some schoolchildren in Rajkot during a political function.

"Children don't have sufficient maturity to judge the nature and consequences of their conduct, therefore using children, even with their consent is against the law of land ... Using children in election work by political parties causes a child's mental and physical suffering which amount to violation of child rights and attract the penal provision under the Juvenile Justice Act and Indian Penal Code," stated the letter.

The letter requests the chief election commissioner to issue necessary instructions to concerned government authorities to ensure the safeguards of children and to initiate prohibiting measures so that children may not be used for election purposes.

Stable UPA govt providing strength to Indian economy: Chidambaram

Written By Unknown on Selasa, 25 Maret 2014 | 17.34

PTI | Mar 25, 2014, 11.27AM IST
SIVAGANGA: Finance minister P Chidambaram on Tuesday rejected media analysis that the "hope" of a stable government after elections is bringing in investments and driving up the capital market and the value of rupee.

He maintained it is not "hope" but the "fact" of a stable government provided by UPA and the numerous measures taken in the last 18 months that have provided stability and strength to the Indian economy.

"I am amused to read in some sections of the media that it is the 'hope' of a stable government that is bringing in investments and driving up the capital market and the value of the rupee. It is not 'hope', but the 'fact' of a stable government provided by the UPA and the numerous measures taken in the last 18 months that have provided stability and strength to the Indian economy," he said.

Chidambaram, who is on a campaign here in support of his son Karti in Lok Sabha elections, said, "If there is any hope that is driving the market, I believe it is the hope that the new government will follow the ten-point agenda that I had spelt out in my Interim Budget speech on 17.2.2014".

The Minister said, "I can assure the people and the investors that a Congress-led government will faithfully implement the ten-point agenda".

Sushma Swaraj would be a better PM than Modi: Digvijaya

BHOPAL: Congress general secretary Digvijaya Singh on Tuesday said leader of opposition in Lok Sabha, Sushma Swaraj would be a much better Prime Minister than Narendra Modi, the official nominee of BJP for the top post.

"I say that Sushma would be a much better Prime Minister than Modi due to a number of reasons," Singh told reporters at his residence here.

Unlike Modi, Sushma Swaraj has an image of a moderate leader. She had begun her political career with the JP movement at a time when she was a student leader but had later on drifted towards the BJP, he said.

Sushma would be "more acceptable to allies" of the BJP in the NDA in the same way that (former Prime Minister) Atal Bihari Vajpayee was, the Congress leader expressed.

"Sushma has conducted herself as the Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha in a very dignified manner, although it was under her leadership that the Lower House of Parliament had faced maximum number of disruptions," he said, adding that he did not agree with her on many issues raised by her in the Lok Sabha.

She made many promises to the people of Vidisha before the 2009 Lok Sabha elections but has not fulfilled most of them, Digvijaya alleged.

The senior BJP leader also adopted two villages in each Assembly segment of the constituency which had given her maximum votes, but their condition was now pitiable, he said.

Sushma would this time be defeated from Vidisha as she has done nothing for the constituency in the last five years, he claimed.

The downfall of the BJP has begun and only Narendra Modi is left in the party, he said.

When asked to comment on veteran leader Jaswant Singh's allegation that both BJP president Rajnath Singh and Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje had betrayed him, Digvijaya said Jaswant was only expressing his sorrow.

To a question on if he would contest the Lok Sabha election from Varanasi as is being speculated, Digvijaya said he is only a worker of the Congress and its leadership will decide from where he will contest the poll or not.

MUMBAI: A year after a five-year-old girl's brutalized body was found outside her house, the Bombay high court on Tuesday confirmed the death sentence for 53-year-old Vashi resident who was held guilty of raping, sodomising and then killing the girl.

Nirbheek, world's first gun for women, to be launched today

KANPUR: Nirbheek, a .32 bore lightweight revolver, designed by Indian Ordnance Factory (IOF) especially for women, will be officially launched in a function to be held at Field Gun Factory today.

The first three women customers have been shortlisted for the launch ceremony, including Geeta Yadav from Lucknow, Kalpana Pandey from Barabanki and Seema Kharbanda from New Delhi.

According to IOF sources, Geeta Yadav is a wife of senior IPS officer; Seema comes from political background while Kalpana is a housewife.

Giving more power to women to defend themselves and as a tribute to December 2012 gangrape victim Nirbhaya, Indian Ordnance Factory, Kanpur, manufactured India's first firearm designed for women. At 500 grams, it is also a first IOF handgun ever designed specially for women, which can easily be carried in handbags. "The selection criteria has been made on first come first serve basis. We are impressed with the sheer number of women customers who submitted their applications for the firearm. All applicants were notified via e-mail and posts of their application status," said DN Verma, joint general manager Field Gun Factory.

"Priced at Rs 1,22,360, we have already done 100 bookings and have been receiving a huge number of queries daily," said Verma. "The weapon is capable of firing six rounds loaded in a revolving chamber, hence any misfire of a round does not affect the next shot, unlike in a pistol," Varma added. Keeping in mind the clientele, IOF Kanpur has also ordered specially designed boxes lined with velvet.

After the Delhi gangrape incident, IOF researchers had worked on a revolver which is light and can be carried by women in their purses or small handbags. The weight of .32 bore revolver is 750 grams, but Nirbheek only weighs 500 grams.

Talking to TOI, Kalpana Pandey, a native of Barabanki, and one of the first three buyers said, "I have decided to buy a gun only after knowing that it is light in weight and easy to carry.

Ashok Chavan's wife, aide file nominations from Nanded

MUMBAI: Even as the Congress' Central Election Committee is yet to take a decision on the party nominee for Nanded in Maharashtra, controversial former chief minister Ashok Chavan's wife Amita and his trusted aide, minister of state for medical education D P Sawant, on Tuesday filed their nominations for upcoming Lok Sabha elections from the constituency.

The decision of Amita and D P Sawant to file papers and that too a day before the last day of submitting the nomination papers is being viewed as a bold political move by Ashok Chavan.

Ever since the election process for the Lok Sabha polls began, Ashok Chavan was a frontrunner for the Nanded constituency and one stage, it appeared that the Central Election Committee will rule in his favour. However, the situation changed completely following critical remarks of Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi over the Adarsh Commission report.

Surprisingly, a clean chit was given to all the politicians involved by the state government and it was decided to initiate departmental proceedings against the erring bureaucrats.

Electoral politics was not the goal of AAP: Prashant Bhushan

THRISSUR: Aam Aadmi Party's (AAP) goal was to voice against the corruption existing in the society, not electoral politics or power, said party leader and eminent lawyer Prashant Bhushan.

He was releasing the book, 'Aam Aadmi Party — Sadharanakkarante Party, written by environmental activist CR Neelakandan at Lakshmi Mandapam hall in Thrissur on Sunday.

'Our aim was to voice against the corruption, not electoral politics or power. We tried to change the system for the good and this took us to the electoral politics," said Bhushan.

He added that there have been a few mistakes at the beginning as AAP faced electoral politics soon after the party was formed, but the party would try its best to continue its fight against corruption rectifying the flaws.

Kerala has a good number of activists in writers and this would help the AAP to grow in the State and form people's movement.

AAP's Thrissur Lok Sabha candidate Sarah Joseph was and other activists were present.

In another programme held at Ndathara near Thrissur, Bhushan alleged that the mainstream political parties bring policies and rules, not for the common man, but for the giant corporates. He was inaugurating 'Janasabha' organized by the AAP there.

"AAP aims at the overall change of India. Realising this as a threat to the existence, corporates, giant organizations and media controlled by them are attacking AAP from all corners. But the party will withstand these attacks," claimed Bhushan.

Bhushan also released the theme song produced by the AAP-Thrissur on the occasion.

Madhya Pradesh Class XII paper leaks, rescheduled for April 12

BHOPAL: After CBSE Physics paper leaked earlier this month, class XII Maths paper of MP Board of Secondary Education (MPBSE) leaked in several places including Gwalior and Vidisha districts on Monday.

MPBSE has launched a probe into the incident and the school education minister Paras Jain had directed that an FIR be registered against those found guilty.

According to reports, paper first leaked in Gwalior. It was also found to be selling in Vidisha for Rs 300.

Students who had sat for the examination were told to stop midway as reports of the leak surfaced. Chaos prevailed in many schools where harassed students milled about in uncertainty.

The paper has been rescheduled twice since morning by MPBSE, according to reports. First it was slated for April 7 which was scrapped as PET exams would be a held a day before, which would make it inconvenient for the students.

Thereafter, April 9 was fixed, that too was unfeasible as April 10 is a polling day for many areas in the state and teachers who are on poll duty would have to leave for those areas a couple of days in advance.

Finally April 12 has been schedule for re-examination of the leaked Maths paper.

Written By Unknown on Minggu, 23 Maret 2014 | 17.34

CARACAS: Two Venezuelans died from gunshot wounds during protests against socialist President Nicolas Maduro, witnesses and local media said on Saturday, pushing the death toll from almost two months of anti-government demonstrations to 33.

Troops briefly clashed with a small group of protesters who attempted to block a highway in an upscale neighborhood of the capital after thousands of opposition sympathizers marched to demand the release of students imprisoned during the unrest.

Demonstrators complaining of soaring prices and product shortages have vowed to remain in the streets until Maduro resigns, although there are few signs that the country's worst turmoil in a decade will force him from office.

Argenis Hernandez, 26, was shot in the abdomen as he was demonstrating near a barricade in the central city of Valencia and died early on Saturday in a nearby hospital, according to local media reports.

A motorcyclist attempted to cross the barricade and opened fire on demonstrators when they would not let him through, wounding Hernandez.

Bus driver Wilfredo Rey, 31, died on Friday night after being shot in the head during a confrontation between demonstrators and hooded gunmen in the western city of San Cristobal, according to residents of the neighborhood where the incident took place.

Rey had not been involved in the protests, they said.

The protests began in February with sporadic demonstrations by university students. They intensified after three people were killed following a February 12 rally in downtown Caracas.

Jailed opposition leader Leopoldo Lopez called on Maduro to resign in a letter read out by his wife at a rally.

"Maduro, if you resign, you will open a path toward peace for Venezuelans," wrote Lopez, who was jailed last month on charges including instigating violence after helping turn the protests into a national movement. "The solution is in your hands."

A group of demonstrators later gathered near Plaza Altamira, which has been a hot-spot of opposition protests, but the National Guard dispersed them with tear gas.

Duelling marches

The opposition has repeatedly declined Maduro's offers for dialogue about the situation, saying they refuse to take part in meetings that will provide little more than photo-ops for the ruling Socialist Party.

Maduro says their refusal to engage in dialogue is evidence they are interested in snatching power rather than negotiating.

During a rally following the pro-government march, Maduro accused opposition extremists of setting fire to a military university in San Cristobal earlier this week.

"Can this be called protest? This is terrorism, this is fascism," Maduro said.

"These 'Chuckies' are the direct descendants of the Nazis," he said, referring to the murderous doll of the horror movie series - a designation often used by government leaders to describe the violent protesters.

Demonstrations have ranged from peaceful marches to violent clashes between police and hooded protesters hurling rocks and Molotov cocktails.

They have also involved street barricades made of trash and debris that is set on fire, snarling traffic and angering drivers of all political persuasions.

Opposition sympathizers accuse troops of using excessive force against demonstrators, spurring outrage that has helped keep the protests going.

Maduro says adversaries are seeking to destabilize the government as part of a Washington-backed coup similar to the one that briefly ousted socialist leader Hugo Chavez in 2002.

Prosecutors in recent days ordered the arrest of two opposition mayors following accusations they had not done enough to clear barricades in their municipalities.

Congress on Tuesday asked prosecutors to open a criminal probe of Maria Corina Machado, an opposition legislator and high-profile protest leader, for crimes including treason and inciting civil war in association with the unrest.

Ruling to strike down Michigan gay marriage ban put on hold

PONTIAC (Michigan): A US appeals court on Saturday placed a temporary hold on a federal judge's ruling that struck down Michigan's ban on gay marriage, a move that followed hastily arranged and joyful wedding ceremonies in the state.

The decision by the US court of appeals for the sixth circuit came one day after the lower court's ruling, which briefly made Michigan the 18th state in the nation to allow same-sex marriage.

The federal appeals court issued a temporary stay in the case until Wednesday, and directed attorneys for the same-sex plaintiffs in the case to respond to the state attorney general's request to place the lower court's ruling on hold pending an appeal.

"To allow a more reasoned consideration of the motion to stay, it is ordered that the district court's judgment is temporarily stayed until Wednesday," the ruling said.

The Detroit News reported that in total four counties issued 323 marriage licenses on Saturday before most clerks closed for the day at 1pm local time.

At least 50 people had lined up in the Oakland County clerk's office in Pontiac, on the outskirts of the Detroit metropolitan area, when Clerk Lisa Brown arrived to open it at 8am local time carrying a heart-shaped balloon.

Brown's staff was among workers in several counties who handed out paperwork to couples undeterred by the Michigan attorney general's immediate appeal of the judge's decision.

Frank Colasonti, 61, and James Barclay Ryder, 48, became the first gay couple to marry in the county. They wore dark suits, with "Same Love, Same Rights" lapel pins.

"We're going to celebrate with a nice quiet lunch and then go pick out our wedding rings," Colasonti said following the ceremony, which took place 26 years after they met at a church.

Moments later, a lesbian couple emerged from the ceremony room, filling the corridor with elated shouts. As more couples arrived, Brown moved the proceedings to an auditorium for a mass wedding ceremony of a dozen couples or more.

Clerics who support gay and lesbian rights also arrived and found quiet corners in the hallways to conduct private ceremonies for couples clutching their newly issued licenses.

Clerks in at least three other counties — Washtenaw, Ingham and Muskegon — opened outside normal business hours on Saturday to issue marriage licenses.

Lesbian couple challenged ban

Michigan's ban on same-sex marriages became law in 2004 as a state constitutional amendment. It was challenged by a lesbian couple from the Detroit suburb of Hazel Park after the law prevented them from jointly adopting each other's children.

On Friday, US district judge Bernard Friedman said the law breached equal protection rights guaranteed in the US Constitution.

Bill Schuette, the state's attorney general, asked the US Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit for an emergency order to stay the decision.

The appeals court initially said on Saturday afternoon the plaintiffs' lawyers had until midday Tuesday to file a response, before later issuing the temporary stay.

Brown, the Oakland County clerk, said the appeal was "a waste of taxpayer dollars."

"I'm no longer forced to discriminate in my office," she said. "Couples who have been waiting years to receive equal protection now have it."

With a temporary stay granted, same-sex couples married on Saturday could find themselves in legal limbo.

In December, a federal district judge in Utah overturned that state's ban on same-sex weddings and Utah's attorney general appealed.

Some 1,300 gay couples were married in Utah in the few weeks before the US supreme court granted a stay while the appeal is considered, leaving the newlyweds uncertain about whether they have the rights generally afforded by marriage.

April DeBoer and Jayne Rowse, the couple who successfully challenged the Michigan ban, said on Friday they would not marry until the legal uncertainty in their state was resolved.

Seventeen states plus the District of Columbia now allow same-sex nuptials, a number that would be substantially increased if a series of recent court decisions in other states are upheld.

Supporters of the ban in Michigan, Utah and elsewhere have cited tradition, religious texts and the welfare of children to defend their belief that only opposite-sex marriage should be legal, arguments that several courts have ruled not sufficient.

Japanese PM Shinzo Abe to visit Anne Frank House in gesture to Jews

AMSTERDAM: Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe will visit the Anne Frank House museum in Amsterdam on Sunday to highlight Japan's friendship with the Jewish people and sees no contradiction with his recent controversial visit to the Yasukuni Shrine at home.

The Anne Frank House, where the German-born Jewish girl kept a diary of her life in hiding before she was discovered and died in a Nazi concentration camp, is now one of Europe's best-known memorials to the victims of the holocaust, drawing more than a million visitors per year.

Abe's planned visit comes less than three months after his controversial December 26 visit to Tokyo's Yasukuni Shrine, seen by Japan's Asian neighbours as a symbol of Japan's wartime aggression, as it honours convicted war criminals as well as others who died in battle.

"On this visit (to the Anne Frank House), we would like to reiterate the lasting and profound friendship between Japan and the Jewish people around the world," a foreign ministry spokesman told Reuters.

Asked whether there was a difference between visiting a memorial to Japanese soldiers at home and a memorial to war victims abroad, the spokesman said "there is no contradiction".

He said Yasukuni enshrines 2.46 million souls who died for their country during conflicts since 1853, including both world wars, and that at the time of the visit, Abe issued a pledge that Japan must never wage a war again.

"Acknowledging historical issues in an open manner and passing down the lessons of history to future generations is the first step to pursuing peace," he said.

Yasukuni played a key role in the wartime state Shinto religion which mobilized the population to fight in the name of a divine emperor. China and South Korea, which both have been occupied by Japan, have repeatedly criticised visits by Japanese leaders to the shrine.

Abe — in the Netherlands for a G7 summit — will be the most prominent world leader to visit the Anne Frank house since Israeli President Shimon Peres, former German President Christian Wulff and former UN secretary general Kofi Annan.

"Abe seems more sensitive to Western criticisms of his revisionism than those coming from China or Korea, and in particular of the Jewish American community as represented by the Simon Wiesenthal Center," Sophia University professor Koichi Nakano told Reuters in an email.

He added that Abe's planned visit to the Anne Frank house appears to reflect his desire to send a message to reassure US policymakers more than anyone else.

An official at the Anne Frank House museum said the story of the young diarist is well known in Japan and more than 33,000 Japanese tourists visited the house last year.

The Abe visit to the house comes after a series of incidents in recent months in Japan in which Anne Frank diaries were vandalized in public libraries. A suspect has been arrested.

A government official told reporters last week that there is no direct causal relationship between these incidents and Abe's visit, but said Abe wants to convey the message that many Japanese people are pained by the vandalism.

Abe is expected to have a trilateral meeting with US President Barack Obama and South Korean President Park Geun-hye

on the sidelines of Monday-Tuesday's nuclear security and G7 summits in The Hague.

Analyst Tobias Harris at political risk consultancy Teneo Intelligence said the meeting will focus on North Korea and is not expected to address the history and territorial issues that have plagued the Japan-South Korea relationship in recent years.

But he added that the ill will generated by Abe's visit to the Yasukuni Shrine remains an obstacle to closer cooperation.

US restaurant owner drowns in the Ganga trying to save another

MIAMI: The founder of a popular Argentine restaurant in Miami and New York City was found dead in a river in India after he jumped in to help a man struggling in the current, according to a statement released on Saturday by his restaurant group.

Hector Rolotti and five other people jumped into the murky waters of the Ganges river last Monday to help the man and Rolotti was the only one who did not make it back to shore, according to the Novecento Group.

Search teams looked for him for days. His body was found on Saturday by a group of locals who alerted authorities and a search team.

Rolotti and his wife were visiting India on a spiritual meditation retreat. They were standing at the banks of the Ganges river with a group of more than 30 people when they heard one of the members calling for help after getting pulled in by the current, the Novecento Group statement said.

Rolotti opened Novecento restaurants in Cordoba and Buenos Aires in Argentina and Miami and New York.

"He was a tireless entrepreneur and family man, always concerned about his children, wife and parents," the restaurant group said. "Hector's great achievement with Novecento was much more than a restaurant chain. It is a meeting point for friends and communities."

Rolotti's remains were expected to be cremated in India and then brought to Miami and Argentina.

Search for survivors continues in US mudslide, 3 dead

SEATTLE: Rescue crews searched into the night for survivors from a massive mudslide in Washington state that killed at least three people, after hearing voices from the debris field pleading for help.

The slide of mud, trees and rocks happened on Saturday morning. Several people, including an infant, were critically injured, and at least six houses were destroyed.

Snohomish County Fire District 21 chief Travis Hots said at a news briefing that searchers weren't giving up on finding more people.

"We have people who are yelling for our help, and we are going to take extreme risks," Hots said.

It wasn't clear how many people might still be alive, he said.

The Snohomish County sheriff's office reported that two people had been killed at the scene. Authorities later said one person who was rescued died at a hospital.

The injured included a 6-month-old boy, who was in critical condition at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle.

Hospital spokeswoman Susan Gregg said two other victims were in critical condition — an 81-year-old man and a 58-year-old man — while a 37-year-old man was in serious condition.

One eyewitness told the Daily Herald that he was driving on the roadway and had to quickly brake to avoid the mudslide.

"I just saw the darkness coming across the road. Everything was gone in three seconds," Paulo Falcao told the newspaper.

Modi will become PM even without Tamil Nadu's 40 seats: Vaiko

CHENNAI: Endorsing the existence of a "Modi wave" across the country, MDMK leader Vaiko said on Saturday that the BJP's Prime Ministerial candidate becoming the next Prime Minister was a certainty even without taking into account the 40 seats of Tamil Nadu.

"There is an immense Modi wave across the country. He will certainly become Prime Minister even without taking Tamil Nadu and Puducherry's 40 seats into account," Vaiko, whose party is part of the BJP-led alliance, told reporters here after releasing the MDMK manifesto.

MDMK is contesting from seven constituencies in Tamil Nadu.

Reacting to chief minister Jayalalithaa's remarks at an election rally that votes to parties other than the AIADMK would "go waste, Vaiko said there should not be a situation where Congress is lent outside support in the formation of the next government at the Centre.

"She is entitled to her opinion. But I believe that your vote is wasted if you vote for anyone other than BJP alliance as any other party might try to get outside support of Congress just for power," Vaiko, who is contesting from Virudhunagar said.

Arvind Kejriwal kicks off Haryana roadshow, slams Cong and BJP

FARIDABAD: Kicking off his two-day Haryana roadshow here, AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal on Saturday slammed the Congress and BJP, saying gas prices will "increase manifold" if the two parties come to power.

The AAP leader, who was shown black flags by some local residents as he launched his tour this morning, said, "Centre should not be allowed to increase gas price from April 1. There are some media reports that EC has taken cognizance of my complaints for which I am very thankful. I hope EC would not allow Centre to increase gas price".

The AAP leader had termed the Centre's decision to increase the price of natural gas from April 1 as a clear violation of the model code of conduct and had written to Chief Election Commissioner V Sampath about it.

"The people of this country should decide themselves as to whom they would vote for in Lok Sabha elections. If UPA or BJP prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi comes to power, the gas price would increase manifold. And, this is only doing to benefit Mukesh Ambani," he alleged.

"We will have to prevent Modi and Congress from coming to power if we have to make India a corruption-free country. Both have worked to 'rob' people of this country," he alleged.

Kejriwal claimed no development has been done in Gujarat by the Modi-led Government.

"I have gone there (Gujarat) and found no development. Modi is fooling people on the issue of development," Kejriwal claimed.

Kejriwal's roadshow will pass through different parts of Faridabad like Chandawali, Dayalpur, Chaynsa, Mohna and Alawalpur and end at Nuh tonight.

The roadshow is scheduled to enter Gurgaon, from where AAP leader Yogendra Yadav is contesting elections, tomorrow afternoon and will continue through various areas.

SIT powerless; independent agency should have probed riots: Congress

NEW DELHI: With Congress stepping up the attack on Narendra Modi on 2002 riots issue, party leader Kapil Sibal on Saturday said like in corruption cases, the Supreme Court should have handed over Gujarat riots probe to an independent agency as the SIT had little powers to arrest or carry out searches.

"While importance is being given to monitor corruption related cases, I think to keep humanity alive, the Supreme Court should have monitored all cases related to Gujarat riots through an independent investigation agency. It is sad," he told a press conference.

He said the Special Investigation Team (SIT) came into being in 2008, six years after the riots. "But who were the officers involved in SIT. They were the police officers under whose jurisdiction riots took place in the state...the SIT had no powers to search, no powers to investigate like CBI. It only recorded statements of witnesses," he said.

He said under such circumstances, the victims could not have got justice.

He made it clear that he was making these remarks as a Congress leader and a Lok Sabha candidate and not as the law minister of the country.

"Till the time, the SC decides to seek details on each and every death, people of Gujarat cannot get justice. We do not trust the Gujarat administration as 25 of its police officials are in jail over fake encounter....

"Under law, there cannot be two FIRs for the same crime. The Gujarat police registered FIRs on its own, therefore, the victims could not lodge their FIRs and name those responsible for the riots," Sibal alleged.

When asked why he he did not rake up the issue earlier, the Congress leader said he had appeared for the victims in court. He said while he is not making any allegation, the needle of suspicion points towards the Gujarat administration.

With the election nearing, Congress has been sharpening its attack on BJP's PM candidate over the post-Godhra riots with Rahul Gandhi demanding "legal accountability" for the "clear and inexcusable failure" of governance during the violence, and dismissed talk of a clean chit to Modi as "politically expedient" but "far too premature".

Sibal also rejected suggestions of a 'Modi wave' in the Lok Sabha elections saying the way the BJP was tying up with regional outfits proved that it was not confident that its prime ministerial candidate alone can bring sufficient numbers.

"If Modi is so confident, then he should contest from Varanasi alone and not stand from another seat in Gujarat. If there is a wave in his favour in Tamil Nadu, will he contest against P Chidambaram's son from Sivaganga," he quipped.

He also took a dig at BJP for denying ticket to party veteran Jaswant Singh.

"Modi only believes in himself. Lok Sabha elections are fought on the basis of policies of political parties not individuals," he said.

Credit card scam: Chennai police arrest 3 Sri Lankans, including man wanted by Interpol

Written By Unknown on Jumat, 21 Maret 2014 | 17.34

CHENNAI: The Chennai police on Friday arrested three men in connection with a credit card scam. One of the arrested men is wanted by Interpol as the Sri Lankan police have issued a red corner notice against him.

Based on the confession of Sivanesan alias Prem, a Sri Lankan Tamil, arrested by Central Crime Branch (CCB) sleuths a few days ago for allegedly using a skimmer to steal data from credit card users in the city, police teams led by CCB deputy commissioner of police S Jayakumar and assistant commissioner of police, bank fraud wing, Jaya Singh, arrested the trio from a house at Ramavaram here. They recovered three laptops, two encoding machines, mobile phones and 15 fake credit cards from the house.

Police identified the trio as Jayatharan Thambapillai, 28, a native of Trincomallee in Sri Lanka, and his associates V Navaneetha Raja, 37, and V Prateep Kumar, 28, both hailing from Sri Lanka.

Jayatharan told the police that he arrived in Tamil Nadu in August last year on an illegal ferry. Later, he contacted Navaneetha Raja and Prateep Kumar and stayed with them at Ramavaram and operated the racket.

Police said Jayatharan, a graduate in civil engineering, developed knowledge in computer and collected stolen credit card data from hackers. He was also regularly in touch with the hackers and exchanged information.

Preliminary inquiries revealed that Jayatharan was involved in several credit card scams in Sri Lanka. As he managed to evade police apprehension and stayed in hideout, the Sri Lankan police issued a red corner notice through Interpol in 2011.

Muzaffarnagar riots should not be used to derive poll gains: Jaya Prada

MUZAFFARNAGAR: The communal violence of last year was an unfortunate episode but no political party should use it to derive electoral gains, Rashtriya Lok Dal leader and actress Jaya Prada has said.

Named the RLD candidate for the Bijnore Lok Sabha seat after she recently joined the Ajit Singh-led party, Jaya Prada appealed to political parties against making the riots an issue while seeking votes.

Talking to reporters here on Thursday evening, she said that political parties should instead focus on questions of farmers' welfare and development.

"The riots were unfortunate, but some political parties want to gain political mileage by exploiting the issue," she said.

Meanwhile, it has been learned that the Purkazi assembly segment in Muzaffarnagar would be included as part of the Bijnore Lok Sabha constituency.

Chidambaram's move shows Cong has lost will to fight polls: BJP

NEW DELHI: Taking potshots at Congress, rival BJP on Friday claimed that the decision of finance minister P Chidambaram to opt out of the Lok Sabha poll race indicated the state of affairs in the party as it was "running away from the contest".

"The (person) who served as the finance minister for seven out of 10 years is not even contesting. He is running away from the contest. He is not willing to face the voting public to give answers as to what his achievements were," BJP spokeswoman Nirmala Sitharaman said here.

Chidambaram's decision to not contest was a symbolic one and an important development which reflects the current mindset within Congress, she claimed.

"It is symbolic that the finance minister, who remained so for the major part of (UPA's) term of 10 years, is not even available for answers. They have no will to fight, they have actually conceded defeat," she added.

Chidambaram has chosen not to contest the Lok Sabha polls and Congress has now nominated his son Karti from his constituency of Sivaganga in Tamil Nadu.

Sitharaman said that BJP had formed a grand alliance in Tamil Nadu which had scared many leaders in other parties.

Those who criticised NDA's 'India Shining' campaign used to say that a dream team of economists — Dr Manmohan Singh, Montek Singh Ahluwalia and P Chidamabaram — will bring in a beautiful, inclusive India, Sitharaman said before charging that this very dream team had left the economy in doldrums.

She said that Chidambaram had also been finance minister before the Atal Bihari Vajpayee-led NDA government which had to do a lot of out-of-the-box thinking to raise the country's growth rate.

She slammed the UPA government for its handling of the economy and blamed the situation where all sectors are facing trouble on the ruling alliance.

She said that led by their prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi, BJP was now asking questions related to development and the economy.
