SALEM: The ruling AIADMK in Tamil Nadu forged ahead of its rival the DMK after the sixth round of counting in the Yercaud assembly byelection held on December 4.

After the sixth round of counting, AIADMK candidate P Saroja with 35,609 was 17,729 votes ahead of DMK's V Maran, who got 17,880 votes so far.

The number of voters, who opted for 'NOTA' (None of the above) increased to 1,276.

The AIADMK and the DMK are the only two parties in the fray. While, for the AIADMK it is imperative to showcase a huge victory margin and boost cadre morale for the forthcoming Lok Sabha election, for the DMK, the fight was to narrow the winning margin and get into a position of strength during alliance formation.
The results, though bound to be in favour of the AIADMK, could reflect people's sentiments on some local issues, besides the acute power shortage in the state.
