The security of prime minister, former prime ministers and their family members, is the responsibility of the SPG.
The PIL was filed by advocate M Balaji who had given the MLA hostel at Omandurar estate on Anna Salai as his residential address. It said the chief minister required protection from a group which is well equipped and trained.
On Monday, when the matter was taken up for hearing the state home secretary informed the bench that the security provided at present to the chief minister was sufficient and there were competent officers in the state force to give full-fledged security to her.
Noting that the PIL itself had not stated that the state police committed any serious lapse in its security protocol to the chief minister, it was argued in court that there was no incident of security lapse reported so far. There is no basis for the PIL's contentions, it was submitted, adding that it was for the Security Review Committee to consider security aspects and threat perception.
Recording the submissions made on behalf of the state government, the bench then dismissed the PIL saying there was no need for any direction to be issued to the government at present.
