Mini truck crashes into crowd killing four, injuring six

THRISSUR: Four persons were killed and six others seriously injured when a mini truck rammed into a group of people who were taking part in 'chozhikkali' as part of the Thiruvathira festival at Kadavalloor, near Kunnamkulam in the district on Tuesday night.

The deceased have been identified as Kopparambath Maneesh (28), Mullappilly Rajan (49), Parachirikkaavil Sudhakaran (35) and Pattaraveettil Mukesh (29), all hailing from Kadavallur. Pattiyampulli Unni (35), admitted to a private hospital in Thrissur, is known to be very critical.

According to sources from the Kunnamkulam police station, the incident took place around 9.30 pm near the Kadavallur temple bus stop. "The driver of the lorry, heading for Kozhikode, lost control of the vehicle and rammed into a tanker and then uprooted three streetlights before hitting the members of the chozhikkali group. Primary investigation revealed that the driver of the lorry was inebriated," said a police officer.

The bodies are kept in mortuary of the nearby private hospitals and will be handed over to the family members of the deceased after post-mortem.

CPM has decided to observe hartal following the incident from Wednesday 2 pm to 6 pm in Kadavallur.
