On Friday morning, seven students complained of nausea and later began vomiting after consuming the midday meal at a government-aided school in Usgao, in the central region of the state.
In the school, which runs classes from kindergarten to the high school level, the students began falling ill within an hour of consuming the meal in the school. The students are being treated at the government-run infectious diseases hospital in Ponda, about 30km from Panaji.
This is not the first such incident in the coastal state. Within days of the new academic year beginning in June, 86 school students in Goa's southern most end Canacona took ill after consuming the midday meal and had to be hospitalized. Though the self help group responsible for the supply was suspended immediately by the state government authorities, parents at the government-aided school have since refused midday meals.
The food and drugs administration in Goa later slapped notices on nine self help groups for cooking midday meals in unhygienic conditions. Goa has been pulled up by the Union human resource development ministry several times for poor monitoring of the scheme.
