Himachal Pradesh chief minister Virbhadra Singh meets Sonia Gandhi in Delhi

SHIMLA: Amid changing political equations, Himachal Pradesh chief minister Virbhadra Singh on Saturday held an hour long meeting with Congress president Sonia Gandhi in Delhi and apprised her about the political situation of state. Virbhadra Singh also discussed the issue of taking new measures for strengthening Congress government in the state.

Sources said that Virbhadra Singh also discussed the issue of filling up the lone vacant Cabinet berth in the state. Virbhadra Singh's meeting with AICC president is considered important politically as Transport Minister G S Bali had met her on Friday. Sources said that Virbhadra Singh also informed Sonia Gandhi about the divisive plans of his rivals to weaken the government in the state.

According to sources, Sonia Gandhi has assured Virbhadra Singh that party command would not interfere unnecessarily into the matters related to state. She asked Chief Minister to take decisions himself to run the state government strongly.

At a time when organization and state government is having difference of opinion on certain issues, Virbhadra Singh in his meeting has suggested some steps to remove shortcomings in the state Congress unit. Sources said that Virbhadra Singh has informed Sonia Gandhi about the activities of party dissidents.

After the meeting of G S Bali with Sonia Gandhi there were speculations that AICC president might lend her support to the activities of dissidents but Saturday's meeting of Virbhadra Singh it has been clear that party high command would not take any decision that might affect Congress party in Himachal Pradesh.

Sources said that party high command is of the opinion that making weakening the position of Virbhadra Singh in the state by encouraging dissidents might directly benefit opposition BJP and would further pose challenge to state government. Virbhadra Singh would return to Shimla on Sunday morning.
