COIMBATORE: A wild animal, suspected to be a leopard, mauled a forest guard to death at a checkpost on the Dhimbam ghat road in Erode district on Thursday night.

The animal dragged the victim, identified as Krishnan (56) from Dharmapuri district, about 50 metres into the forest. Krishnan was on duty at the forest department's checkpost. "The guard was dragged 50 metres away from the spot where he was attacked. There are bite marks on the neck," said Ramraj, forest range officer, Thalamalai, Erode.

According to forest officials, the animal might have attacked the forest guard while he was answering the call of nature. The animal partially fed on the victim before leaving his body there. A postmortem was conducted on the body at Sathyamangalam government hospital.

This is the second incident of wild animal attack on the Dhimbam ghat road, which is a busy route for heavy vehicles and cars heading towards Karnataka. A truck driver hailing from Thalavadi in Erode district was killed by a leopard on the road last month.
