In a statement, DMK organising secretary TKS Elangovan said promoting one language would lead to national disintegration. "Sanskrit is not common man's language. Only upper class people speak and are allowed to learn Sanskrit. The BJP government is trying promote RSS's agenda," he said.
All the classical languages, including Tamil, should be promoted, he added.
MDMK leader Vaiko said promoting just one language would affect national integrity. He said imposing a single group's language on others was mischievous and dangerous. "Tamil Nadu will never permit this," he added.
PMK leader S Ramadoss urged the CBSE to withdraw the order. "Sanskrit is spoken only by 14,000 people. We can't accept imposition of it on people speaking other languages. There should be common language policy. Discrimination is not right," he said in a statement.
The PMK leader said the government should promote all languages. "The CBSE could celebrate Tamil week here (in Tamil Nadu) and it can celebrate respective languages in other states."
HRD minister Smriti Irani had said that states had been asked to celebrate Sanskrit week in schools and a similar circular had also been given by the CBSE to its affiliated schools. "The ministry has recently written to the chief secretaries as well as the education secretaries to organise the Sanskrit Saptah in schools across the country," she said.
The CBSE has conducted about 50 teachers training programmes and seminars across the country to orient the teachers in communicative approach to teaching Sanskrit.
