MUMBAI: Riding on success of its small car Dastun Go, Nissan India plans many brand extensions, model revamps and increase in manufacturing capacity and dealership network to consolidate its presence in competitive Indian car market.

Nissan this year became India's second largest passenger car exporter in FY14 tipping Maruti Suzuki by exporting 1.16 lakh cars, now plans to focus on the domestic market to ramp up its sales.

Takashi Hata, senior vice president, Nissan Motor Company Limited, had taken over as senior vice president and chairman of Nissan's Africa, Middle East in February and was in Mumbai last month to inaugurate its new sales and marketing head quarters in BKC.

"In the last two weeks, we have seen the traffic improving. People are now getting less concern of the future. That's a great sign of the belief of the people and is leading to more and more footfalls in our showrooms. Initially we were concern about the appetite of the people but that's improving day by day with the new government at the centre," said Hata adding Nissan is now looking at reaching full capacity at their Oragadam (Chennai) plant to produce 480,000 units from 4, 00,000 units now to focus on improving domestic market sales.

Nissan's domestic sales grew three-fold to 5301 vehicles in April, and over two-fold in May to 5021 vehicles, capturing 3% market share in India. The company plans to keep the sales numbers growing through its proposed launch of Datsun Go+ in the SUV segment and a new variant of its mid-size sedan Sunny later this year.

Hata humbly accepts that Nissan initially failed to make its presence felt in the Indian automobile industry but now with the success of Dastun Go, plans to capitalize and keep the momentum going.

"Nissan has done very poor in India, we accept that humbly and we need to improve on that. Car sales need to be complemented with after sales service, where Maruti has the lead. We need to focus on that. We have not changed ourselves to understand the need of the customers. But now I am confident with the nature of our products. Let the products talk for themselves," Hata told ToI.

Hata is also very optimistic with the new government at the centre with believes that Indian and Japanese prime ministers have some similarities that will boost Indian -Japanese bi lateral trade.

"I am told that Japan will be the first foreign country that Narendra Modi is likely to visit after taking over charge as the Indian prime minister. Modi and our prime minister Abe has lots of similarities in terms of their nature, way of thinking and working style. We are all excited about NaMo's visit to Japan. The Japanese prime minister Abe was the chief guest for Republic Day on January 26 early this year," said Hata.

Nissan has expanded to 200 dealers from 120 to reach more customers to ramp up its sales.
