Gas leak in Chhattisgarh’s Bhilai steel plant: Magisterial probe ordered

RAIPUR: Even as a magisterial probe commenced into the Carbon Monoxide (CO) gas leak at Bhilai steel plant, which left six dead, including two DGM rank officials, and 40 others hospitalized on Friday evening, six more people were admitted to a local hospital on Saturday with symptoms of poisoning.

While authorities refused to confirm whether these new case were related to evening's CO gas leakage, doctors attending upon them at the Jawaharlal Nehru Hospital and Research Centre, Sector 9, said their symptoms appeared to be those of poisoning but it was difficult to say whether it was because of the gas leak or otherwise. Officials of the steel plant have however, dubbed these cases as "unrelated" to the gas leak.

According to officials, the magisterial probe by the Drug Additional District Magistrate would go on simultaneously with another inquiry by the Deputy Director Industry Safety and Assistant Labour Commissioner, instituted under the Industrial Safety Act. When contacted Drug Collector, R Sangeetha, said the magisterial probe is underway and it would take a few days for the officer to record the statements of the survivors and other witnesses.

Meanwhile, eyewitnesses to the last evening's disaster claim that things could have been worse if the Central Industrial security Force (CISF) hadn't been conducting a mock drill around the time of the mishap. "The mock drill proved a blessing in disguise, as the CISF personnel were already around the campus and on an alert", said an officer on condition of anonymity.

Eyewitnesses claimed that following the leak, 34 people were rushed to the Sector 9 hospital and five of the dead, including the two DGM-rank officials, died while being treated. The body of the sixth deceased, Vikas Verma, was found after the waster drained out of the pump house where the mishap occurred.

The dead have been identified as Deputy General Manager BK Singh (56), Deputy General Manager NK Kataria (56), master technician, A Samuel (48), Senior Operator Yarad Ram Sahu (53), Assistant Fire Station Officer Ramesh Kumar Sharma (58) and contract labourer Vikas Verma.
With VVIPs thronging the Bhilai Steel Plant to take "stock of the situation", the magisterial probe into the mishap made no headway on Saturday, as the entire administration was busy in protocol duties.

The VVIPs who visited the plant since morning included Chhattisgarh Governor, Shekhar Dutt, State Congress President, Bhupesh Baghel, women and child welfare minister, Ram Sheela Sahu, legislator, Vidya Rattan Bhasin, SAIL chairman, SC Verma and CEO of the Plant, Chandershekhar.
