NEW DELHI: Pakistan PM Nawaz Sharif has said he is carrying a message of peace to India and that talks are the only solution to resolve outstanding issues between the two countries.
Sharif, who landed in Delhi at 11 am on what is his first official visit to Indian, is likely to push for resumption of the composite dialogue process when he meets Modi for a bilateral meeting on Tuesday.
Sharif is in India to attend the swearing-in ceremony of PM-designate Narendra Modi. He was received at the airport by chief of protocol Pradeep Rawat and India's high commissioner to Pakistan TCA Raghavan.
Sharif made the remark about the need for talks between the two countries before his departure to Islamabad. This is the first time that a Pakistan prime minister will attend oath-taking ceremony of his Indian counterpart.
Sharif is accompanied by his son Hussain and also a 4-member delegation lead by Sartaz Aziz, his adviser on foreign affairs.
While no substantive dialogue is likely during the 30-minute meeting on Tuesday, sources said both the leaders were expected to refer to outstanding issues and the need to act decisively to resolve these. In this context, India expects Sharif to refer to the Kashmir dispute.
Indian officials, however, remain confident that Sharif is not going to meet Hurriyat Conference leaders who have sought invitation from the Pakistan high commission to come to Delhi. No invite had been sent to them until Monday morning though.
Many expect Modi to take a tough line on Pakistan, but Modi himself has been discreet on issues related to foreign policy. He told Sharif, when the latter called him to congratulate him for his victory, that the two countries needed to work together to pull more people out of abject poverty.
