Addressing a massive election meeting in coastal Kanyakumari, a Congress bastion, Sonia Gandhi said the country was facing a challenge today.
"A dangerous combination of religious fanaticism, politics and money are coming together. Their intention is to polarize and divide people on communal lines," she alleged.
"We know once communal harmony is broken, there is no peace. No one can progress, the country cannot progress," she said.
Hitting out at Modi, she said the BJP was in the hands of one individual. "He claims to have a solution for all the problems in the country. He promises to make the country a paradise," she taunted. "But you must reject him," she added.
Sonia said political parties in Tamil Nadu allege that the Congress had not done enough for Sri Lankan Tamils. "But can you name any other party that has done more than the Congress for the welfare of Sri Lankan Tamils," she asked.
However, all through the speech Sonia refrained from mentioning Congress's erstwhile ally DMK or criticizing the ruling AIADMK, but for a brief mention that it had taken a considerable time to get concurrence of the AIADMK government to hold fishermen's talks.
