"As of now, we are working to field a candidate in all 80 constituencies of Uttar Pradesh and the search for the apt candidate is going on in full swing," said Manuj Singh, member screening committee of AAP's UP unit. He added that the list is also being trimmed at a fast rate. "Many candidates have not submitted complete forms while others do not have a clean image. Till the work done so far, around 600 have survived the primary level weeding," Singh said.
He said the response has been overwhelming in cities like Lucknow, Kanpur and Ghaziabad. While 120 persons have applied for ticket in Lucknow, 150 have applied in Ghaziabad and 50 in Kanpur. Singh added that the response has been promising in places like Varanasi, Gorakhpur and Pratapgarh as well.
The willing candidates hailed from different walks of life. They include teachers, academicians, union leaders, businessmen and social workers. Some popular leaders of AAP are likely to enter the fray against top political leaders which will make the contest interesting. Kumar Vishwas has already declared that he will Rahul Gandhi in Amethi, while Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal could contest against Sonia Gandhi in Rae Bareli. But if Kejriwal decides to take on BJP president Rajnath Singh in Ghaziabad, then AAP national spokesperson Sanjay Singh may enter the fray against Congress president.
The name of journalist-turned-politician Ashutosh is doing rounds for Lucknow seat. The Avadh unit of AAP has already sent a proposal for his name. Similarly, controversial cartoonist Aseem Trivedi, who was jailed during Anna Hazare's movement, has expressed the desire to challenge Congress MP Annu Tandon in Unnao. The party has also decided to field candidates against Congress leaders Salman Khurshid in Farrukhabad and Sri Prakash Jaiswal in Kanpur.
Manuj Singh shared that the number of applicants is higher in urban areas as compared to rural areas. For example: some 120 applications have been received for the urban seat of Lucknow while just eight persons have applied for Mohanlalganj seat.
AAP's UP unit has clarified it would not field any candidate in state's assembly byelections or elections for member of legislative council (graduate group).
However, it is not going to be easy for AAP candidates to make it to the final list. The party is set to introduce a screening process which would check credentials and assessment of every candidate in an interview by human behaviour analysts. "Those who clear the screening will have to face the interview. And those who pass the interview would face the final round," said a party functionary. Gautam Bharti, a probable candidate from Mohanlalganj, who has faced the interview, said the interface was grilling as done in competitive exams.
