SURAT: Chhitubhai Devji Gamit, 73, senior Congress tribal leader from Tapi district passed away at Bardoli hospital after the brain stroke on Tuesday morning.
With the demise of Chhitu Gamit, the tribal belt in south Gujarat has lost three tribal leaders including former Chief Minister Amarsinh Chaudhary and Jinabhai Darji.
Sources close to the Gamits said that Chhitubhai's health was not good from the past one year following a paralytic attack in the right side of his body due to brain stroke. Around 11 years ago, Gamit had undergone by-pass surgery following a heart attack.
Gamit, who was residing with his family at Valod taluka in Tapi district, was immediately rushed to the hospital on Tuesday morning after he experienced a severe stroke. After a brief treatment at Bardoli hospital, the doctors declared him dead at around 10:30 am.
He (Gamit) is survied by his wife and three sons.
The Congress has always been the dominant force in the Mandvi Lok Sabha constituency and that the seat was held for seven consecutive terms since 1977 by Chhitu Gamit. However, the Congress run was halted by the BJP's Mansinh Patel in 1999 when he defeated Gamit for the first time in the Mandvi parliamentary constituency election by over 56,800 votes.
