One of the pilots supposed to operate this flight has recently converted to the B-787 from the Airbus A-320 and his licence was sent to the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) for having the Dreamliner endorsed on it and also for renewal. Just like driving licences specify the type of vehicle a person can drive —commercial/personal/light/heavy/two wheeler — pilot licences specify the type of aircraft they can fly.
The DGCA endorsed B-787 on the pilot's licence but forgot to renew the same. AI realized this oversight at the last minute. No pilot can operate without a valid licence.
The airline then went looking for crew to operate the Birmingham flight. Since getting another pilot for it was taking time, the other pilot originally rostered for this flight was sent to operate a Dreamliner to Australia.
Then AI managed to get two pilots — one of them being a lady pilot who flew in AI's first Dreamliner from US last September — for the Birmingham flight and it finally took off three hours after schedule time. Ironically, AI promises better on time performance with its new B-787s even as it faces both technical and crew shortage issues that make it hard to operate the Dreamliners as per schedule.
AI Dreamliners, whose operational base is Delhi, have on time performance of about 97% while the airline was aiming for about 99.5%. Boeing has promised to upgrade the software of the aircraft from this week. Dreamliners globally are facing technical issues with software and flight control being the weakest spot in terms of developing glitches.
