"We are against Modi's communal act and attitude. We don't want him here," S Geetha, one of the protesters, said. Police detained nearly 70 protesters when they blocked the road. Some Islamic outfits also have announced protests against Modi's visit.
Meanwhile, state BJP president Pon Radhakrishnan criticised the protesters and urged the state police to probe the 'conspiracy' behind these protests. "The whole younger generation believes that Narendra only Modi can save the nation. But a few fringe groups protested against his visit. Police should identify the forces behind these kinds of protests," Radhakrishnan told reporters.
The Gujarat chief minister will attend the Nani Palkhivala memorial lecture at the centenary auditorium of the University of Madras and will also release former Union minister and BJP leader Arun Shourie's book 'Self-Deception: India China Policies.'
Modi would meet office bearers of the state unit of the BJP at the party headquarters, Kamalalayam, in T Nagar.
The police have sanitised the Madras University centenary hall and the entire campus to ensure foolproof security. Security has also been increased at Kamalalayam.
The BJP has organised a reception for Modi at the Chennai airport. Party workers from Chennai, Kancheepuram and Tiruvallur districts expected to participate at the function.
This is Modi's second visit to Tamil Nadu in less than a month. On September 26, he addressed a public meeting in Tiruchirappalli.
