Opposition forces adjournment of Rajya Sabha over petrol price hike

NEW DELHI: The Parliament on Monday adjourned till 2 pm after uproar over the petrol price hike issue. Opposition members forced both the Rajya Sabha and the Lok Sabha to adjourn till 2 pm. They were demanding a rollback, saying that the petrol price hike would hit the common man.

The matter was first raised by Trinamool Congress member Derek O'Brien as soon as the house met for the day. Immediately, the entire opposition including the BJP, Samajwadi Party, AIADMK and JD(U), joined him, demanding rollback.

Chairman Hamid Ansari first adjourned the Upper House for 10 minutes and then till 12 noon and later till 2 pm when the members did not relent.

The opposition members were not ready to listen to the minister of state for parliamentary affairs Rajiv Shukla, who said the government was willing to discuss the petrol price hike issue in the house. Shukla said the hike was the result of price deregulation.
