Nine killed as vehicle falls into Yamuna after landslide in Uttarkashi district

DEHRADUN: At least nine people including four women, aged between 35 to 50 years, were killed and one was seriously injured, on Sunday evening after a huge rock triggered by a landslide, fell on a private taxi carrying them from Yamuna valley to Bhansari village.

The rock pushed the taxi into Yamuna river, on Dehradun-Yamnotri NH in Uttarkashi district. All deceased and injured belonged to nearby Bhansari village in the district.

While bodies of six devotees were fished out of from swollen Yamuna river by a team of swimmers, three others were apparently swept away in fast current of waters. A senior police officer in Uttarkashi said efforts are on to recover these three bodies.

Driver of taxi identified as Jagat Singh, is among those killed in incident.

Uttarakshi DM R.Rajesh Kumar said incident occurred around 4.30pm when these devotees were their way back to their homes at Bhansari village after offering special prayers at Lord Shiva temple in Yamuna valley. Kumar said as the taxi carrying them was passing through from roadside Krishana village near Badkot town, it was hit by a rock.

Seriously injured is admitted in Naogaon Community Health Centre (CHC). Bodies of those killed were handed over to their family members and relatives after their post-mortem examination.

Chief minister Vijay Bahuguna has asked senior district officers to pay compensation to the next of kin of those killed and injured in the incident.

Bahuguna who flew into Chinlayanisain town under Ganga valley in Uttarkashi district, on Monday to inaugurate foundation stone ceremony for some development projects like construction of bridges over Bhagirathi, did not visit bereaved family members of those killed in incident. A senior administrative in Uttarkashi, however, said CM Bahuguna could not come to meet family members due to his tight schedule.
