RAIPUR: Bharatiya Janata Party president Rajnath Singh said on Wednesday that India should register its strong protest and also take up at international forums the issue neighbouring China's plan to build dams on the Yarlung Tsangpo-Brahmaputra river as it would harm downstream interests, particularly of the north east.
"China's move to build a series of dams on Brahmapura will prove disastrous to the downstream regions of north east. But the UPA government is still soft-pedalling over the issue", he alleged at a press conference here on his arrival to attend a meeting of the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM).
Pointing out that had raised the issue even in the past, Singh said then the centre took a stand that there was no such move by the neighbouring country. Now, since it has become clear that the plan to build dams on the river is still on track, the centre should register its strong protest with China, he added.
The BJP president demanded that India should either press for setting up an international Brahmapurtra river water tribunal for arriving at an international water treaty. "There could be a tripartite treaty between India, China and Bangladesh", he added.
Alleging that country's relations with its neighbours had hit an all-time low during the UPA regime, the BJP chief claimed that there have claims on Arunachal Pradesh, which is an integral part of India. On the other side too, Pakistan has been violating the line of Control (LoC) and it was also trying to internationalize its issues with India, he pointed out.
Referring to the recent incident of beheading of Indian solider, Singh said this gruesome incident coupled with other recent developments on the border prove that it was high-time that "we should scale down the level of our diplomatic relations with Pakistan".
