This is the first year that the state government is conducting a common half-yearly exam for board exam students in Class 10.
The move was made to give students a feel of the boards before the actual exams, scheduled from the end of March.
District department officials were forced to make a round of calls to the heads of schools in their respective areas to ask them to postpone the exam.
School heads said that they received the call at around 8.30am. The exams begin at 10am.
"I don't understand what anybody would gain from leaking the half-yearly question papers. It's only a loss to the school, because these exams are expected to serve as a revision and as a pre-board," said a school correspondent.
The school education department had distributed the question papers to schools earlier this week. Schools were supposed to open the question paper bundles ataround 9.45am, just before the exams began.
"I am so disappointed that the exam have been postponed," groaned Class 10 student Sridhar. "I had prepared well for the test over the weekend. Now, I have to prepare myself to take the exam on Thursday again," he added.
Monday's exam was supposed to be the last half-yearly exams for Class 10 students.
The second term exams had already been delayed because the state was forced to declare several rain holidays and festival holidays this term, resulting in a loss of working days.
A couple of exams were conducted in December, followed by the winter break for Christmas, with the remaining exams scheduled in the first week of January.
