NAGPUR: C-60 commandos from Pranhita headquarters in Aheri in South Gadchiroli gunned down six Naxal cadres, including senior leaders, in an encounter in the jungle near Govindgaon village in Jimulgatta in the wee hours of Sunday.
Gadchiroli police sources claimed that divisional committee member Shankaranna, Aheri dalam commander Vinod and his wife Geeta were among the shot dead. Identities of one more female and two male cadres were yet to be established. Police said that the Naxals were addressing a meeting in the village when the security forces reached the place. There were around two dozens Naxals present.
Preliminary probe suggested that the members were from Jimulgatta platoon. While a group fell in the trap laid by the C-60 commandos, some others managed to sneak away.
Deputy inspector general of police, Naxal range, Ravindra Kadam, said that the district police's special commando team had taken strategic positions waiting for the Naxals to come towards the forest before launching the operation. "It was an information based operation for which the commandos were sent," said Kadam.
Following the encounter, police has recovered one self-loading rifles, one .303 and two 12-bore rifles.
